Who produces history, and under what conditions? While historical knowledge has long been shaped within academic frameworks, the involvement of non-professional actors\u2014from historical societies to community archives and activist associations\u2014has a rich history. The international conference “Citizen Practices in Producing and Preserving the Past” examines the processes, methodologies, and collaborations through which citizen historians engage in collecting, classifying, and interpreting the past from the nineteenth century to the digital age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference takes place at the University of Luxembourg, Belval Campus, on 11 and 12 May 2026. Hosted by the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C\u00b2DH), the event is part of the research project Citizen Participation in History and Heritage Production (CIPHH), funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), in collaboration with the Laboratoire d\u2019histoire et de patrimoine de Montr\u00e9al (LHPM, Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al) and the research project \u201cAgents m\u00e9moriels, un engagement citoyen d\u2019hier \u00e0 aujourd\u2019hui\u201d (Montr\u00e9al, Canada).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme features seven panels covering topics such as collaborative practices in digital history, heritage disputes, community activism, and participatory research, and will be held in a hybrid format.<\/p>\n\n\n
