Dancing as historical method"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p>A three-year study at the C\u00b2DH explored how realities as evanescent and unserious as dance parties have been documented in archives and can be reclaimed through an experimental methodology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"        id=\"an-eventful-methodology\"\n    >\n<strong>An \u201ceventful\u201d methodology<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/popkult60.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Popkult60 research project (FNR-DFG)<\/a>, focusing on European transnational popular culture in the long Sixties, gave C\u00b2DH researcher Laura Steil the opportunity to deploy an experimental methodology, in the form of creative reenactments, to uncover the history of balls in Esch-sur-Alzette, centering on the working-class <em>Grenz<\/em> neighborhood. For her <em>Dancing Esch<\/em> project, she collaborated with local cultural players such as Kufa, Ferroforum, BiBSS and Escher Theater, with Luxembourgish swing dancers and an orchestra led by Luciano Pagliarini, to conceive the <em>Swigning Esch<\/em> and <em>Feier\u00f4wend <\/em>events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were inspired from data collected in national, municipal, and private archives, oral history interviews, and ethnographic observations. Importantly, they relied on crafting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/en\/events\/volleksgeschicht-zu-letzebuerg-sennvoll-verbindunge-mat-leit-maachen-ger-lux\/\">meaningful relationships with people over time<\/a>, and inviting them to participate in the research process. Andreas Fickers, has insisted on the role of the senses when doing historical research on music, media, or radio, advocating for an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1515\/9783110799774\/html?lang=en&amp;srsltid=AfmBOorambNMlLIQgIwPSOsgYfywU03vy3cKaTPtEnfUh7hr97NgH190\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experimental media archeology<\/a>\u201d. Laura Steil, anthropologist by training, has always used \u201cparticipant-observation\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/popkult60.eu\/popkult60\/assets\/pdf\/pistes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">her studies of festive cultures<\/a>. Before researching Luxembourgish nightlife, she carried out fieldwork in <a href=\"https:\/\/laviedesidees.fr\/Laura-Steil-Boucan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afro-Caribbean and hip-hop nightclubs<\/a> in Paris. Traditional archives often fail to capture the sensorial and emotional dimensions of nightlife, its so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/popkult60.eu\/popkult60\/assets\/pdf\/tanzrausch.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">intoxication<\/a>\u201d, saying more about the organisational, regulatory and economic dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To explore less documented dimensions and \u201csummon\u201d them back, <em>Feier\u00f4wend<\/em>, co-conceived with Ferroforum, was held in the central workshop of the Metzeschmelz. Presented as an homage to the festive <em>Grenz<\/em>, it juxtaposed live <em>Danzmusek<\/em> with an analog DJ set of disco and rare grooves; it mingled the sights, smells and tastes of homemade panzerottis and fries with those of iron, dust and fire, perspiring from the factory. The second edition, in September 2024, was filmed by Carlo Thiel and the orchestra\u2019s performance recorded by Philophon. It will be issued as an LP accompanying Laura Steil\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tageblatt.lu\/kultur\/feieren-fester-musek-an-danz-am-minett-une-valse-de-mots-et-dimages\/?pwt=6d4f784b4c7048394f5552356d626c6276412f484c57544b554e556c44554857537264494f4332796b475156726a305673356665795674317548586f6867496b52476e65665a437865754f61334f4c4d526f473664316350556863556e6f344c38354574734f514a754353446e643047576c4e2f753370517245645a2b5a536543773d3d337c33f3fa13629978f594c1020bfe337c33304703e92e6aacc7e21ccce1fdd031f4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">upcoming book<\/a>. Alongside events, she conceived and filmed a dance tutorial video at the university\u2019s Media Center with one of her research participants, an 82-year-old former factory worker, magician and DJ. Together, they gave a dance \u201cclass\u201d at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ferroforum.lu\/articles\/feierowend-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">second edition<\/a> of <em>Feier\u00f4wend<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A \u201cbody-on\u201d approach is especially fruitful when working on forms of memory that are difficult to articulate through words. Embodied experiences based on, but also creatively deriving from, traditional sources may \u201cbring the data home to us, in the plenitude of their&nbsp;action-meaning\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/4335047\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Turner, 1979: 82<\/a>). They may also produce an \u201cafterlife of dances\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/23266897\">Lepecki, 2010: 31<\/a>) and new <em>noeuds de m\u00e9moire<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/41337077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rotherberg, 2010: 8<\/a>).
