{"id":8012,"date":"2017-09-15T07:16:52","date_gmt":"2017-09-15T05:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/c2dh-en\/articles\/digital-approaches-towards-serial-publications-18th-20th-centuries\/"},"modified":"2025-03-26T14:26:08","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T13:26:08","slug":"digital-approaches-towards-serial-publications-18th-20th-centuries","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/c2dh-en\/articles\/digital-approaches-towards-serial-publications-18th-20th-centuries\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital approaches towards serial publications (18th\u201320th centuries)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p><strong>In this post, I want to reflect on some of the presentations I was attending during the workshop organised by the Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 11 and 12 September 2017 the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghentcdh.ugent.be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities<\/a> organised a conference in the lovely Rubenszaal at the Royal Academies for Sciences and Arts of Belgium in Brussels. The conference aim was to bring together humanists, social scientists and computational scientists who have been working with historical serial texts and\/or periodicals, giving everyone involved the opportunity to discuss the progress of current tools and approaches and to think about the theoretical and heuristical limitations and possibilities that came up during research projects. The methods used and the research content that was discussed was very diverse, ranging from NLP to Linked Data and Social Network analysis, to name a few. It would take too far to give an extensive outline of every talk that was presented, so my goal is to highlight a few key points that I took with me from the conferences. Let\u2019s take it serious<\/strong> <sup><sub>Quote adapted from a tweet by Masoud Shahnazari on 12 September 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CyberLiterature\/status\/907597663352344581\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/CyberLiterature\/status\/907597663352344581<\/a>.<\/sub><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A first subject that was very present during most of the talks was OCR quality. This is often one of the first hurdles any \u2018digital historian\u2019 comes across when trying to analyse their texts, be it periodicals, conference reports or books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The talk of Thomas D\u2019Haeninck about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghentcdh.ugent.be\/sites\/default\/files\/D\u2019haeninck%2C%20T.%2C%20Hengchen%2C%20S.%20and%20Verbruggen%2C%20C.%2C%20\u2018A%20genealogy%20of%20causes\u2019_recognizing%20social%20reform%20topics%20in%2019th%20century%20congress%20series.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technics to recognize social reform topics and to create a genealogy of social causes<\/a> showed that OCR quality really is important to get accurate results, and especially if you want to perform topic modelling or text mining. As D\u2019haeninck showed: out of the enormous amount of congress reports they gathered, a mere 10% was good enough to do topic modelling or text mining. Furthermore, he summarised that the topic modelling didn\u2019t lead to especially new insights, although he was to some extend able to see trends appearing when it came to social charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The presentation of Thomas Verbruggen and Thomas D\u2019Haeninck in a later session explored this topic further by looking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghentcdh.ugent.be\/sites\/default\/files\/Verbruggen_Workers_of_the_World_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at digital approach towards the international scope of Belgian socialist newspaper<\/a>. Text mining and Named Entity Recognition (NER) were used to search for expressions of banal internationalism in two newspapers. The results made clear that running a NER programme isn\u2019t that simple and that this is often a trial and error exercise with different NER packages as the NER used for their experiment had a lot of anomalies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The talk of Manfred N\u00f6lte about the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghentcdh.ugent.be\/sites\/default\/files\/GentCDH_Abstract_Noelte-Blenkle.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Die Grenzboten<\/em><\/a> showed again that good OCR and post-OCR processing is important for delivering high quality full texts to researchers. In his talk, he showed that something can be done about OCR mistakes. The <em>Grenzboten <\/em>project<em> (87 years, 187.000 physical pages)<\/em> took approximately 2,5 years to digitise the journals (18 months) and to perform post-OCR correcting (12 months). One of the goals of post-OCR processing was to boost its recognition rate from circa 92% to 99%, out of which they reached 98%. To accomplish this, they made for example use of the Australian company ProjectComputing who provides the service <a href=\"http:\/\/overproof.projectcomputing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OverProof<\/a> to enhance OCR. It really is something you should consider very careful before diving in to such big endeavour on your own, as these were all collaborative projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, in the case presented by Mike Kestemont and Thorsten Ries about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghentcdh.ugent.be\/sites\/default\/files\/Martens,%20Ries%20and%20Kestemont,%20A%20challenge%20for%20stylometry%20and%20authorship%20attribution%20methods-%20Goethe%E2%80%98s%20contributions%20to%20the%20Frankfurter%20Gelehrte%20Anzeigen%201772:73_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenges in stylometry and authorship attribution methods<\/a>, it seemed that OCR correction wasn\u2019t necessary as the stylometry approach can handle a lot of OCR \u2018noise\u2019 before a text can\u2019t be attributed anymore. Also during the talk of Seth van Hooland about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghentcdh.ugent.be\/sites\/default\/files\/Van%20Hooland%20et%20al%20-%20abstract.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Topic Modeling and Word2Vec to explore the Archives of the European Commission<\/a> more positive results were created by using LDA, as NER didn\u2019t give convincing results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Getting to the heart of a researcher is letting them choose their own colour, trust me, it works.<\/strong> <sub>Quote from Joris Eijnatten during his presentation, captured in a tweet by Joke Daems on 12 september 2017. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jokedaems\/status\/907582089918377984\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/jokedaems\/status\/907582089918377984<\/a>.<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another aspect that was mentioned, is that our digital approaches don\u2019t always need to be that complicated, and that with simple approaches we can maybe sometimes accomplish a lot more in our research. This was for example the case with the research of Franc\u0327ois Dominic Larame\u0301e who gave a talk about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghentcdh.ugent.be\/sites\/default\/files\/FDL%20--%20BRUXELLES%202017%20--%20Abstract%20v3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">text mining a noisy corpus of Ancien Re\u0301gime French periodicals<\/a>. He had to deal with \u201csignificant methodological challenges, due in no small part to the unreliable quality of the OCR\u2019ed source material [\u2026]\u201d. To tackle some of these spelling mistakes he used a Levenshtein\u2019s algorithm to identify keyword tokens that were corrupted by the OCR and also used manual reconstruction of metadata. Due to these problems, more \u2018low key\u2019 digital methods (token counts, metadata analysis and co-occurrence networks) had to be used and were sufficient to produce interesting results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Related to the importance of simplicity Joris van Eijnatten stressed in his talk \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghentcdh.ugent.be\/sites\/default\/files\/Van%20Eijnatten%20-%20abstract.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In praise of frequency<\/a>\u2019, that we need simplicity in order to attract researchers into the field of digital humanities, and that \u201csimple counts [could] produce intuitively more convincing results than the complicated &#8216;shock and awe&#8217; algorithms often vaunted in digital humanities&#8217; projects\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"alignfull wp-block-unilux-blocks-gallery-carousel\">\n    <div class=\"swiper swiper-gallery\" aria-roledescription=\"carousel\" aria-label=\"A gallery of images\">\n        <!-- Swiper button Next & Prev -->\n        <div class=\"swiper-nav\">\n            <div class=\"swiper-nav__container\">\n                <div class=\"swiper-nav__grid\">\n                    <button type=\"button\" class=\"swiper-button-next\">\n                        <svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" class=\"icon icon-outline icon--arrow-right \"><use xlink:href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/themes\/unilux-theme\/assets\/images\/icons\/icons-outline.svg#icon--arrow-right\"><\/use><\/svg>                    <\/button>\n                    <button type=\"button\" class=\"swiper-button-prev\">\n                        <svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" class=\"icon icon-outline icon--arrow-left \"><use xlink:href=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/themes\/unilux-theme\/assets\/images\/icons\/icons-outline.svg#icon--arrow-left\"><\/use><\/svg>                    <\/button>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n\n        <!-- swiper slides -->\n        <ul class=\"swiper-wrapper\">\n            \n<li class=\"swiper-slide\" aria-roledescription=\"slide\">\n    <figure class=\"wp-block-dev4-reusable-blocks-image swiper-slide__bg object-fit--contain\">\n    \n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-image unilux-custom-image-block\"\n                alt=\"\"\n            src=\"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/03\/ppt_slide.jpg\"\n                    style=\"object-position: 50.00% 50.00%; font-family: &quot;object-fit: contain; object-position: 50.00% 50.00%;&quot;; aspect-ratio: 16\/9; object-fit: contain; width: 100%;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n\/>    <\/figure><\/li>        <\/ul>\n\n        <!-- Swiper pagination -->\n        <div class=\"swiper-pagination\">\n            <div class=\"swiper-pagination__bullets\"><\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<p>Also Kaat Wils argued that simplicity is necessary but she also stressed that we shouldn\u2019t forget that research is always a combination of close and distant reading, and that digital techniques \u2013 be they simple word searches or more complex topic modelling \u2013 also has its limits and does not necessary tell something about the content or meaning of a text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"    >\nPeople &amp; data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the discussion panel, Sally Chambers recapped the two-day conference in three words: tools (which is outlined above), people and data. The prominence of these last two topics made clear that preserving, digitising and researching serial publications is a collaborative endeavour. A lot of projects have been launched and a lot effort has been put in digitalisation and digital access as the talks of Manfred N\u00f6lte, <a href=\"https:\/\/hal-bnf.archives-ouvertes.fr\/hal-01389455\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jean-Philippe Moreux<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/warpress.cegesoma.be\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dirk Luyten<\/a>, Marysa Demoor, <a href=\"\/Users\/noelle.schon\/AppData\/Local\/Microsoft\/Windows\/Temporary%20Internet%20Files\/Content.Outlook\/F4IUJREX\/Belgica%20Press\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc D&#8217;Hoore<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/lab.kb.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lotte Wilms<\/a> proved. Telling during these presentations was the problems that libraries as well as researchers face when it comes to the reasons we digitise content (preserving, researching, or both) as this often gives issues concerning copyright restrictions.Of course there is also the cost that comes with mass-digitisation and the maintenance of databases and websites.
