{"id":7133,"date":"2022-05-05T07:05:56","date_gmt":"2022-05-05T05:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/c2dh-en\/articles\/thinkering-playful-experimentation-with-digital-tools\/"},"modified":"2025-04-29T18:08:19","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T16:08:19","slug":"thinkering-playful-experimentation-with-digital-tools","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/www.uni.lu\/c2dh-en\/articles\/thinkering-playful-experimentation-with-digital-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"THINKERING: Playful experimentation with digital tools"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-unilux-blocks-free-section section\"><div class=\"container xl:max-w-screen-xl\">\n<p><strong>Five years C\u00b2DH \u2013 Five ways of innovating and sharing history. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interdisciplinary and digital workflow of the C\u00b2DH is inspired by the concept of \u201cthinkering\u201d \u2013 a combination of the verbs \u201ctinkering\u201d and \u201cthinking\u201d that describes the action of playful experimentation with new digital methods and tools for the study, interpretation and narration of history. Experimentation is an integral part of C\u00b2DH\u2019s research methodology. The idea is to promote a hands-on approach to new digital sources, tools and infrastructures for the practice of history while also critically assessing the impact of digital tools and technologies on historical research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> C\u00b2DH Thinkering Grant<\/strong> promotes such experimental approaches within the centre by recognising innovative and high-risk research or outreach initiatives with the aim of fostering creative uncertainty and interdisciplinary cooperation among C\u00b2DH staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-unilux-blocks-heading\"    >\nDoctoral Training Units<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The C\u00b2DH\u2019s teaching and knowledge transfer activities also build on the thinkering philosophy. The centre aims to be a place of fearless learning where students and young researchers have the opportunity to experiment and explore new paths in a secure academic environment. A great opportunity for promoting innovative and experimental research projects at PhD level is the Doctoral Training Unit (DTU) initiative within the FNR\u2019s PRIDE scheme. Our first <a href=\"taxonomy\/term\/18\">DTU&nbsp;on Digital History and Hermeneutics (DHH)<\/a> was designed to serve as an experimental space in which different communities of practice and epistemic cultures \u2013 including historians, philosophers, linguists, computer scientists, geographers, information and data scientists and experts in human-computer interaction \u2013 could negotiate new forms of knowledge production in the field of digital history and humanities. From 2017 to 2021, the DTU hosted 13 PhD students from 10 different countries. In the coming years, the follow-up DTU, entitled \u201c<a href=\"node\/3953\">Deep Data Science for a Digital History\u201d (D4H)<\/a>, will focus on the trading zone between history and data science. In collaboration with partner institutions such as LISER, LIST and the departments of history and computer science at the University, the DTU will focus on the question of how to make sense of \u201cbig data of the past\u201d, since the practice of history in the \u201cage of abundance\u201d requires new approaches to data management, mining, visualisation and interpretation.
